Why Supply Chain Leaders Need Integrated AI Now

Written by Ralph Hess | Jan 30, 2026 2:00:01 PM

This is a tough moment for supply chain management.

As the global trading order breaks down and tariff disputes lay havoc to carefully planned supply chain operations, there’s great concern about macroeconomic factors and how they will play out over the next five years.

When IDC surveyed more than 12,000 business executives for its 2025 Global Supply Chain Survey, more than 75 percent identified macroeconomic concerns as their top concern. This number was even higher for supply chain executives and chief operating officers, where 82 percent cited these macroeconomic factors as their principal worry.

At the same time, many COOs and supply chain executives are concerned about legacy technology and a hodgepodge of systems that make it harder to adapt as supply chain dynamics change; roughly 60 percent of supply chain execs said their ability to respond to disruptions is impeded by legacy technology.

Specifically, legacy systems make it hard for supply chain managers to get the right data and insights for adjusting supply chain dynamics as things change.

Integrated AI in a Crazy Supply Chain World

Supply chain executives know what they need to handle the current geopolitical environment, according to the IDC survey.

  1. Integrated supply chain processes so data silos don’t impede visibility.
  2. Easy data analytics so supply chain staff can quickly spot what’s going on.
  3. Backend software that can help staff and partners spot trends and make adjustments without the need for technical support.
  4. Better tools for quickly extracting insight from data.

All of these needs can be met with AI, and supply chain executives know it. Executives told IDC that AI, in addition to an integrated backend system, is the most important technology for their supply chains both in the short and long-term.

That’s because chat-based AI properly connected to business data via a company’s enterprise resource planning solution can help deliver the visibility and insight that supply chain staff need right now, and it can assist even when staff don’t have a technical background. It also potentially could be opened up to partners, who could get shared visibility through this generative AI as well.

If only there were a way to get this marriage between ERP and generative AI today…

As it happens, there is.

Meet SAP Business Suite

SAP Business Suite is a cloud-based platform that unifies ERP, business applications, data management, and advanced AI into a comprehensive whole.

At the core of SAP Business Suite is SAP Cloud ERP, also known as S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition. SAP Cloud ERP is a thin core that orchestrates and brings together all the data and applications that power a business.

This ERP core connects with the Business Data Cloud, a fully managed and centralized cloud data management solution that houses and governs all business data for use elsewhere in the system.

On top of this foundation sits all the applications needed to run the business, including robust supply chain management. These applications might be part of the core ERP, or they might be add-on applications added from or integrated with the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) marketplace.

Crucially, connected to this data and application stack is SAP Business AI, an artificial intelligence layer that enables AI engines such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Anthropic’s Claude to work with a company’s business data or even operate applications to automatically carry out tasks set by the company.

As a platform built on a modern, modular cloud-based ERP, SAP Business Suite addresses the drag from legacy software now and as technology changes. With the AI layer that has access to all business data and supplier reporting, as well as the applications that manage a company’s supply chain, SAP Business Suite also enables integrated AI for quickly identifying supply chain trends and making adjustments in real-time.

AI-Driven Supply Chain Tools Are Closer Than You Think

While comprehensive and flexible in scope, SAP Business Suite is not a massive undertaking to roll out like it might appear. Yes, it is an ERP solution. But it is a cloud ERP solution, engineered for modularity and fast rollout in as little as 90 days when best practice defaults are used and implementation accelerators such as the GROW with SAP program.

At the same time, SAP Business Suite and its underlying ERP is an industrial-strength solution that can start small but expand to meet the needs of the largest multinational companies. Rollout can be fast, but SAP Business Suite is not a light version or stripped-down solution.

Supply chain executives need better tools for handling current global instability, and they need integrated AI for handling complexity fast. SAP Business Suite meets their needs, and it is available right now.
